Early Life and Background Abhinandan

Born on June 21, 1983, in Tamil Nadu, India, from a family with a strong military legacy.

His father, Simhakutty Varthaman, is a retired Air Marshal, and his mother is a doctor.

Studied at Sainik School, Amaravathinagar, and the National Defence Academy.

Abhinandan Military Career

Commissioned into the Indian Air Force in 2004 as a Flying Officer in the fighter stream.

Initially flew Su-30 MKI fighter jets, demonstrating exceptional piloting skills.

Subsequently transitioned to the MiG-21 Bison squadron, known for its agility and air combat capabilities.

Known for his calm demeanor, quick thinking, and adherence to professional ethics in high-pressure situations.

The 2019 Engagement and His Bravery:

During a dogfight with the Pakistan Air Force in February 2019, Abhinandan successfully shot down a Pakistani F-16 fighter jet with his MiG-21 Bison before his own aircraft was hit.

Ejected safely and landed in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, where he was captured by Pakistani forces.

Despite being captured, Abhinandan displayed exemplary courage, composure, and adherence to the Geneva Conventions, earning respect from both sides of the border.

He was released unharmed within 48 hours following international pressure and diplomatic efforts.

Awarded the Vir Chakra, India's third-highest wartime gallantry medal, for his exceptional courage and professional conduct during the aerial engagement.
